Field Note — March 2026

Late-Stage Design Changes Are Exponential, Not Linear

There is a dangerous assumption in many projects:

“It’s just a small change.”

After structural coordination, there is no such thing as a small change.

Key Insight

Once a project moves beyond early design phases, every revision carries amplified consequences.

Changes no longer affect only drawings.

They affect structure, fabrication, scheduling, liability, and coordination across multiple disciplines.

At that stage, revisions do not add impact.

They multiply it.

By the time structural coordination is complete:

• Structural members have been sized
• Anchoring points have been fixed
• Fabrication drawings are underway
• Material orders may already be placed
• Installation sequencing has been locked

Even a minor visual adjustment can trigger:

• Structural recalculations by engineers
• Redrawing of shop drawings
• Re-fabrication of components
• Programme shifts
• Re-coordination across trades

What appears as a 10% design change may create a far larger ripple across the project.

Project Reality

We have all seen this firsthand.

A late request to “adjust the proportion slightly” can quickly become a structural redesign.

A different internal spine.
A new base plate.
Revised load distribution.
New professional engineering endorsement.
Additional liability exposure.

At that moment, the smallest adjustment becomes the most expensive decision in the room.

This is why sequence discipline matters.

Design must be frozen before steel is cut.
Steel must be confirmed before liability is assigned.
Liability must be assigned before installation is scheduled.

Creativity thrives in the right phase.

In the wrong phase, it becomes expensive.

In complex architectural and public art projects, timing is not administrative.

It is structural.
