Field Note — February 2026
When Methodology Quietly Disappears
Methodology rarely collapses dramatically.
It erodes. Even experienced practitioners can drift.
Key Insight
As projects accelerate, discipline often weakens.
Deadlines tighten.
Confidence increases.
Gradually, process begins to shift.
Conversations replace documentation.
Assumptions replace verification.
And sequence begins to blur.
When methodology weakens, projects begin to rely on instinct rather than structure:
• Conversations replace documented decisions
• Assumptions replace verification
• Design intent drifts across teams
• Engineering recalibrations appear late
• Project risk increases quietly
None of these changes appear dramatic at first.
But together they alter the stability of the entire process.
Project Insight
The Sydney Opera House is often celebrated for its final form.
Less discussed is the turbulence behind its delivery — cost escalation, political friction, and engineering recalibration.
It was not a failure of vision.
It was a reminder that vision without aligned methodology creates instability.
Working without method is like standing on scaffolding and gradually removing the bolts because everything “feels stable”.
For a while, nothing happens.
Until it does.
In public work, the margin for improvisation is small.
Method does not restrict creativity.
It protects it.
When methodology disappears, risk rarely appears immediately.
It accumulates quietly.
And in public projects, the cost is rarely aesthetic.
It is structural.
Financial.
Reputational.
Public projects have long memories.
