3D Printing

When Process Becomes the Focus.
Craft Isn’t Lost. Its Relocated.

Field Note — April 2026

At the exhibition, people would stand in front of the pieces for a moment.

Walk around them.

Look at the surface.

Then someone would say it. “It’s 3D printed.”

And that became the explanation.

Not what it is. Not why it was made. Just how.

You could see where the attention shifted.

Away from the work. Towards the process.

But standing there a little longer, something else became clear.

The craft hadn’t disappeared. It had moved.

Key Insight

When execution becomes cleaner there is less to read on the surface.

Less texture.
Less visible effort.
Less material noise.

So the work is read differently.

Not through how it was made. But through how it holds.

Project Insight

In more traditional processes, craft is immediate.

You see it in the hand.
In the surface. In the irregularities.

Here, that layer is quieter.

Which makes the decisions louder.

Where the form turns.
How elements meet.
How the structure resolves.

There is less to absorb uncertainty.

What used to be adjusted during making now has to be resolved before anything is produced.

Dimensions must align.
Connections must work.
Tolerances must hold.

That’s where the work shifts.

Application

A simple check before production:

• Does the form hold without surface detail?
• Are proportions resolved without material reliance?
• Is the structure clear without explanation?

If not the process will only make that more visible.

Closing

Craft doesn’t disappear.

It becomes less visible.

And more dependent on what was decided before the work was made.

Technology doesn’t reduce craft. It relocates it.

From what is seen to what is resolved.
