Field Note — April 2026

Good Design Creates Objects.
Great Design Creates Behaviour.”
Field Note — April 2026
Most design conversations still revolve around the object.
How it looks.
What it’s made of.
How it sits in the space.
And once that’s resolved, the assumption is: the job is done.
Key Insight
But objects don’t define a place. People do.
And people don’t respond to objects. They respond to how a space makes them behave.
Where the shift happens -
You can build something beautiful. Precise. Well-detailed. Resolved on paper.
And still end up with a space no one uses.
Because nothing in it tells people:
• where to pause
• where to sit
• where to gather
• or why to stay
Good design produces something. Great design sets something in motion.
It creates:
• pause
• movement
• interaction
• return
Not by forcing it. But by allowing it.
Project Insight
On site, this becomes obvious very quickly. You’ll see it in the first few days.
People either: move through or settle in
And that decision has very little to do with how the object looks.
Good design creates objects.
Great design creates behaviour.
That’s the difference between something that gets noticed…and something that gets used.
