A Drawing Never Meets the Site

Scale Changes Everything.

Field Note — May 2026

On screen, the sculpture felt resolved.

The proportions worked. The lines carried movement.
Everything sat comfortably within the frame.

Then it reached site. And the space changed the reading immediately.

The height felt different. The surrounding buildings carried more weight than expected.
Distances stretched.

What felt balanced in the rendering suddenly felt smaller in reality. Not wrong. Just different.

Key Insight

A drawing exists in isolation. A site never does.

Scale is not only about dimensions.

It’s about context.

What surrounds the work. What competes with it.
What compresses it. What overpowers it.

The moment something enters a real environment the site starts redrawing the project.

Project Insight

With the dragonfly sculpture, the shift became obvious during placement studies.

On screen, the form felt prominent.

On site, the environment absorbed it more aggressively than expected.

The landscape was larger. The viewing distances were longer.
The surrounding architecture carried more visual presence.

The sculpture had to work harder to hold the space.

That’s when the understanding changes.

A rendering is not a prediction. It’s a reference point.

Because scale behaves differently once gravity, distance, movement and human perspective enter the conversation.

Before locking proportions:

• Study actual viewing distances
• Understand surrounding visual weight
• Test how quickly the form reads from approach
• Observe how the environment competes with the object

Because what feels large on screen can disappear on site.

Closing

The site always changes the work.

Sometimes subtly. Sometimes completely.

And good design comes from recognising that early enough to respond.

Renderings describe intention. Sites reveal reality.

And between the two the project finds its true scale.
